JAJPUR: Five persons were arrested by Panikoili police on charges of smuggling chromite ore on Tuesday.Of the five, four are employees of Rohit Ferro-Tec Limited, a steel plant in Kalinga Nagar industrial complex area in Jajpur.The arrested have been identified as Sudip Mukhia (26), security officer, Rajkishor Palei (35), security in-charge, Bikram Bhutia (32), weighbridge operator, Bhagirathi Samal (33), stockyard supervisor of Rohit Ferro-Tec plant, and Ashok Mallick (30), an employee of a private transport company which has been assigned to transport the raw materials from mines to the plant in Kalinga Nagar.On a tip off, Panikoili police had seized a chromite ore-laden truck from a nearby area on March 14. They had seized about 11 tonnes of stolen mineral worth ` 1.30 lakh from the truck and arrested its driver Brundaban Barik.During interrogation, the driver revealed that five persons, including four employees of the Rohit Ferro Tech plant, were involved in the smuggling of chromite ore. Basing on this information, police on Tuesday managed to arrest all the five from different areas.Police said SS Transport Agency was assigned to ferry raw materials from the Sukinda mines to the Rohit plant. However, instead of dumping the ore in the company’s stock yard, the miscreants sold them in black market, Jajpur SP Deepak Kumar revealed.The accused were produced in the court of JMFC at Jajpur Road on Wednesday which remanded them in judicial custody.
