KOCHI: The total number of fever deaths reported in the district this year has more than doubled from last year. While a total of 8 cases were reported in 2010, the number has so far reached 20 this year. The increase is mainly owing to the diseases including leptospirosis (rat fever), hepatitis, malaria and dengue. But. the total number of fever cases has reduced by more than 40 per cent. As of October 31, 2010 the number of fever cases reported in the district was 2,28,734. In the same period this year, the number has gone down to 1,34,536.The greatest increase is in the number of hepatitis A cases. While the total number of cases reported last year was 36, the number has already crossed 217 this year. The hepatitis A cases touched a peak in August with a total of 118 cases. But the number has been reducing since then. In October it was 69.The cases of leptospirosis have been on a steady increase since August. From two in January the number of cases has gone up to 47 in October. The total number of confirmed cases this year is 181 while in 2010 it was 107. The number of suspected cases in 2010 and 2011 are 5 and 88 respectively. The number of chickungunya cases too has gone up. While a total of 4 confirmed cases were reported last year, the number has reached 12 so far this year. Typhoid cases on the other hand have increased from 77 last year to 110 this year. The reduction is mainly in the case of unidentified fever. While the number of cases in this category was 21,622 till October 31,2010 the same has reduced to 17,330 during the period this year.
