BANGALORE: Around 500 farmers gheraoed the office of Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) on Tuesday regarding compensation for land acquired for Peripheral Ring Road (PRR) project. They wanted to meet officials to move past the deadlock over compensation. Urban Development Minister S Suresh Kumar rushed to the spot to pacify farmers. The farmers dispersed after the minister said he would arrange their meeting with the officials next week.Kumar told the farmers - who had gathered under the banner of Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS) - that Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa would address their grievances in the meeting next week.He added that all the concerned parties will take part in the meeting.Kumar said the following issues would be discussed in the meeting: inadequate compensation in the earlier phase of the project; giving developed sites to farmers whose land was acquired; streamlining the process of documentation; and return of unused acquired land to farmers. The farmers were in no mood to give in but started dispersing after KRRS President Kodihalli Chandrashekar told them he would follow up with Kumar regarding the promises he made on Tuesday. The gherao came a day after the BDA announced that farmers whose land was acquired for Phase I of the project (between Tumkur Road and Hosur Road) will get a revised compensation package, pending state government’s approval. The farmers will get BDA sites too, depending on extent of the land that was acquired for the project.
