Dhaka: Fakhruddin Ahmed, former governor of Bangladesh's Central Bank, was on Friday sworn in as head of the interim government tasked with steering the country out of its political crises by conducting national elections.
President Iajuddin administered the oath of office to Ahmed, a Princeton-educated former World Bank employee who is widely seen as a politically neutral figure. Ahmed was heading the government's micro-finance department till now.
President Iajuddin had resigned on Thursday night as the head of the caretaker government, imposed a state of emergency and postponed elections scheduled for January 22 after the Awami League-led Opposition announced a boycott.
The country has been wracked by months of violent protests and economic paralysis amid demand by the Awami League lead alliance to hold elections under a 'neutral' caretaker government.
