Renu Gora is a bronze medalist at world boxing championship in 2006.

New Delhi: A photograph published in the national daily Hindustan Times on Saturday has yet again put the sorry state of Indian sportspersons in the limelight. The newspaper carries a picture of national boxing champion Renu Gora purportedly serving tea at the National Institute of Sports in Patiala.

The paper quotes Renu as saying, “I have to follow orders, even if it means serving visitors. I don't like it one bit but I cannot afford to disobey my seniors.”

The report also states that Renu was found serving tea to officials and then was seen washing the dirty dishes.

However, when CNN-IBN spoke with her, Renu had an altogether different story to tell.

She denied that she was made to serve tea and said she did not have anything to complain about regarding the training institute policies. Renu, a bronze-medalist at the World Boxing Championship in 2006, was promised a job in the Railways.

When the job didn't materialise, she took up a one-year coaching course at the Patiala institute, only to be found doubling up as a waitress and a cleaning lady.

However, National coach, G S Sandhu has denied any sort of exploitation.

Sandhu said, "Koi bhi aisi baat nahi hai ki exploitation hai..woh ladki bhi aaj nahi hai yahan kal aa jayegi uski statement. karwa denge (Nobody forced the star boxer Renu Gaur to wait the tables. She is not here today, but we will ask her to speak to you tomorrow)."

What's your reaction?
