THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Increased domestic production of foodgrains and effective market intervention by the State and Central Governments alone can ensure the food security of the state, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has said. He was inaugurating the Onam-Ramzan Metro People’s bazaar organised by Supplyco in the city.Chandy said that the government will take effective measures to stabilise the prices of the essential commodities. The responsibility of providing all the basic facilities to the people rests on the government and this has to be properly addressed. Under the Central Government’s ambitious project ‘ Right to food’ scheme, the State would be provided rice at Rs 3 per kg.Food and Civil Supplies Minister T M Jacob, who presided over the function, said that 5 lakh ration cards were issued by the government within three months. This was much more than the announced target of 3 lakh. He said that the government will make use of the railway freight service to transport foodgrains to the state if the lorry strike continued.Transport Minister V S Sivakumar distributed the Rajiv Gandhi Consumer protection awards to Thiruvananthapuram Consumer Protection Committee, Kozhikode Consumer Protection Committee and Kerala Sate Consumer Council, Kollam. K Muraleedharan MLA inaugurated the “Sabari-Maveli Sammana Mazha,” a prize scheme introduced by Supplyco. Deputy Mayor Happi Kumar, CPM district secretary Kadakampally Surendran, DCC secretary Manacaud Suresh, Socialist Janata (Democratic) leader Charupara Ravi and BJP district president Karamana Jayan were also present.
