We have to eliminate the scourge of pirates,” said Mitropoulos.He also spoke about tackling issues in IMO through consensus instead of going in for vote. “What would be the success of going in for vote when it is adopted by 51 per cent of majority in the globe and rejected by another 49 per cent,” he said.He added that IMO was a rich man’s club till that image was changed by former secretary general of IMO Chandrika Prasad Srivastava who was instrumental in giving voice to the poorer nations.Lars Modin, managing director of International Tanker Management Holding, Dubai, spoke on ‘Course of Shipping in this Decade.’ He said the decade saw a boom in shipping industry with many new orders to build ship and fleet growing. Along with it came the threat of piracy.He also highlighted that the age of ship hardly holds any factor in number of accidents. “It has to do with maintenance.
