SAMBALPUR: The education project launched by Hindalco around the Hirakud Complex, aimed at improving the sliding education standards in the region, has been a huge success. The one year project was initially launched in collaboration with Sower, a Chennaibased NGO on January 19 this year, to facilitate students of Governmentrun schools. Five experienced teachers were entrusted with the implementation of the project. Apart from providing private tuition and life skill education to students, monthly unit tests are conducted to gauge their academic progress.
While the primary students attend a twohour tuition before regular school, from 6 am, secondary students attend afterschool tuition classes from 5 pm to 7 pm. The project now has 153 students over three tuition centres under its ambit.

The project has benefited the students. Shefali Das, a ClassIV student in Hirakud NAC School had scored 281 out of 550 marks in the pretest. Following the tuition, Das notched the first position in her class, scoring 383 marks.
