KOCHI: Kerala students will get a rare opportunity to interact with Nobel Laureate Dr Lee Hartwell, recipient of the 2001 Nobel Prize for Medicine. An online interaction with Dr Lee Hartwell has been scheduled as part of a science camp organised by Amrita University in Kochi.A four-day science camp ‘DST Inspire Camp 2012’ is being conducted by Amrita University for the students of class XI and XII from May 18 to 22 at the Amritapuri campus. About 200 science students from across the state are expected to attend the camp where they will interact with the scientists through lectures and hands-on workshops. The highlight of the camp will be student’s online interaction with Dr Lee Hartwell. He will share his vision for teaching sustainability. Students’ interaction with two research studies including Amrita’s HP Catalyst partners from USA, the Colorado School of Mines and the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma are also planned.The camp will offer students interactive sessions with scientists including K G Narayanan, scientist and former chief advisor of DRDO, professor P T Manoharan, Ramanna Fellow, SAIF, IIT Madras, professor Karmeshu, Bhatnagar Award recipient, dean, School of Computer Science, JNU, Delhi, Ajith Basu, chief programme officer, Agastya International Foundation, Harish Bhat, Centre for Ecological Sciences, Indian Institute of Science, Sanjeevan, chairman, Pollution Control Board, PRG Mathur, chairman, International Union of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences, Babu S Suresh, scientist, Space Physics Laboratory, Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, professor VPN Nampoori, Emeritus Professor, International School of Photonics, Cusat, Kochi.Topics for hands-on workshops will include walk-through the mobile science labs, nanotechnology now, computer-human interaction and haptics, game-based learning, online labs for science experiments, visit to recycling centre, how to make compost etc.
