CHENNAI: Monday was a gory day for the residents of Kattupakkam. In a horrific incident, close to a hundred dogs were allegedly killed by workers of the local Panchayat Union over the weekend. Six workers who were caught injecting 25 dogs before tossing them into their vehicle were stopped by residents, who called in the Blue Cross of India (BCI). N Elangovan (27) and M Kalaimesan (29), who were caught in the act have been arrested, said police. Apparently, the dog killing had been ordered after repeated complaints of dogs being a menace to kids and others. Selvi, a resident and president of the AIADMK women’s wing in that area said, “My dog had gone out of the house and I was shocked to find a man with a syringe in his hands grab him.” When she questioned him, he said that rounding up of all dogs had come as an order by the Corporation and the BCI. She continued, “But when I called the BCI, they moved on to the next street.”The residents were apparently witness to dogs being grabbed with steel wires, puppies being beaten and injected with lethal substances. Nageshwar Rao, a High Court advocate recalled, “On Sunday, 80 dogs were killed. They were buried in an empty plot in Senthilpuram. When we dug the place, we managed to find a few bodies but we will need a crane to dig out the rest.”Blue Cross officials claimed that the injections that were meant to sedate the dogs, instead caused them to be poisoned and die slowly. “When I arrived I saw dogs writhing on the ground in pain,” alleged Dawn Williams, GM of BCI, “So we can only assume that it might have had some poison like cyanide.”  Twenty five corpses had been taken to TANUVAS in Vepery for a post mortem, he added. When contacted police officials said that an FIR had been filed.
