The Dera, which has a considerable following in the Delhi's neighbouring states Haryana and Punjab, claims to have about 20 lakh followers in Delhi alone.

Chandigarh: The Dera Sacha Sauda which commands considerable support among weaker sections in Delhi has decided to support the Bharatiya (BJP) for the upcoming polls in the national capital. According to sources, the Dera's political committee will meet to take the final call on who they will back. The Dera had played a crucial role in the BJP's victory in Haryana.

Ram Singh, chairman of the sect's political affairs wing, also said that the Dera has decided to support the Akali dal candidates.

The Dera, which has a considerable following in the Delhi's neighbouring states Haryana and Punjab, claims to have about 20 lakh followers in Delhi alone out of which 12 lakh are voters. The sect had announced to support BJP candidates during Haryana Assembly polls in 2014 and the party stormed to power for the first time on its own.

"Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh is impressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's initiatives like Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, drive against female foeticide and drugs in the country," Dera members said.
