Ujjain: The famous donkey fair held annually on the banks of Kshipra river in Madhya Pradesh is also facing the flak of demonetisation.

Being held in Ujjian this year from November 11 to 14, the cattle fair is hosting handful of buyers as people don’t have enough cash to make purchases. Traditionally the fair starts from Ekadashi and runs till Purnima in the month of Kartik according to the Hindu calendar.

Potters and washermen take part in this fair in huge numbers for buying donkeys used in their trades.

During the fair, decked up donkeys are put up for sale.

This fair not only deals in sale-purchase of donkeys but other animals from Maharashtra, Gujarat and Rajasthan, too are brought here.

However, like other trades hit by currency crunch, this cattle fair is also finding it difficult to match steps with the business done in last few years.

Chhagan Lal Chakravarti, organisational secretary of All India Kumbhkar Federation said that both the buyers and sellers have turned up in low numbers this year in the fair due to the cash crunch in market.
