'Delhi Govt Systematically Dismantling DCW...': Swati Maliwal Writes To Arvind Kejriwal
In a letter to CM Arvind Kejriwal, Swatinaliwal highlighted the 'arbitrary take over' of the 181 Women Helpline from DCW by the Delhi government.

AAP Rajya Sabha MP and former Delhi Commission For Women (DCW) Chief Swati Maliwal wrote to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday pointing out the “systematic dismantling” of the state women’s rights body since her resignation in January.

Maliwal in a letter to CM Kejriwal claimed that the government has “destroyed” the systems she built since 2015 and mentioned the challenges faced by the DCW currently including the “arbitrary budget cuts for the commission”.

“I am writing this letter to bring attention to how the Delhi government has been systematically dismantling the DCW (Delhi Commission for Women) since my resignation from the position of chairperson in January 2024. It is deeply regrettable that the systems that I had painstakingly built since 2015, are being destroyed by the government,” Maliwal stated in her letter to Kejriwal.

In the letter, Maliwal claimed that the commission’s foundational systems were “non-existent” and stated that her predecessor only handled one case in eight years.

Highlighting the challenges faced by the DCW, Maliwal mentioned the “Arbitrary take over of 181 Women Helpline” and stated, “The Delhi Government’s Women and Child Development Department issued an order to reclaim operational responsibility for the 181 Women’s Helpline from DCW.”

“The Commission has been informed that the order was issued after the approval of the concerned Minister and is supposedly in compliance with a Central Government directive which states that 181 Women Helpline should be run by WCD Departments in states,” it further stated.

“Regrettably, it is appalling that the 181 Women Helpline was closed down yesterday,” read the letter.

Mentioning the cessation of funds, arbitrary budget cut for the Commission, removal of staff of the Commission and vacancies in leadership roles, Maliwal appealed to the Delhi CM to intervene in the matter and urged the Delhi government Ministers to uphold their responsibilities towards the women and children of the capital.
