Unable to withstand the burden of debt, a 50-year-old man from Chintadripet committed suicide by consuming acid, here on Saturday.
Police sources said, Abdul Rashed, a mobile phones retailer on Ritchie Street, residing in Chintadripet, had borrowed money from several money lenders to set-up his business.
However, as the business did not pick up, the debt burden grew. Lenders, it was claimed, had also started putting pressure on him to repay the loans.
According to police, on Saturday Abdul’s wife, Shakeera Begum, found him lying on the floor with froth in his mouth, when she returned home. Although it was reported that Abdul had accumulated huge debts worth `32 lakh, police said it was not known if the money was borrowed at very high interest rates.
Abdul was rushed to the Government Hospital in Royapettah on Saturday night. He died early on Sunday.
Labourer Run Over
A 60-year-old man was mowed down by an over-speeding car as he attempted to cross the Velachery main road on Saturday morning. Subramaniam, a construction worker from Tiruvannamalai, suffered multiple injuries after he was run over by the vehicle. He was rushed to the Government Hospital at Royapettah where he was pronounced dead.
Police said the driver of the car was arrested and an investigation is being conducted.
Motorcyclist Killed
A collision between a motorcyclist and an auto rickshaw on the Medavakkam-Mambakkam high road resulted in the death of a person on Saturday morning.
The accident claimed the life of Rangarajan (34), a shop owner and a resident of Chithalapakkam. Rangarajan suffered severe head injuries and was pronounced dead on arrival at a private hospital at Perumbakkam.
Police said that the auto driver has been arrested.
