THENHIPALAM: Stung by criticism, Calicut University Syndicate has decided to quash all the land deals it approved during its meetings. The decision was unanimously taken in the Syndicate meeting urgently convened on Tuesday evening. Anomalies were pointed out even by the Syndicate members about allocating land to the kin of Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) leaders. The University had decided to hand over land for Green Sports Complex (GSC), Badminton Development Trust (BDT) and Grace Educational Trust (GET), all headed by persons close to IUML. GSC had been planned in association with the Kerala Olympic Association headed by the brother-in-law of Social welfare Minister M K Muneer. The BDT is headed by father-in-law of P K Kunhalikkutty and GET headed by IUML state president Panakkad Hyderali Shihab Thangal. A total of 43 acres of land was allocated to these three projects.“The controversies about the land deals have raised questions about the credibility of the Syndicate. If the public is not interested in the projects why should I hang on to it? So the Syndicate unanimously took the decision to cancel the land deals,” Vice Chancellor M Abdul Salam said at a press conference after the SYndicate meeting. He however, denied that it was the anomalies regarding the land deals that forced the Syndicate to take such adecision. However, the university has not dropped the GSC project. It is planning to start the project in association with UGC and other government functionaries. The Syndicate also cancelled the allocation of one acre land to Thenhipalam panchayat to construct a bus stand, which had been approved by the previous Syndicate. The Syndicate meeting has entrusted a sub-committee to look into the alleged flaws in the University land leased todifferent employees organisations.
