A jawan of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), who was on security duty at the Raj Bhavan, allegedly committed suicide on Friday.
Thangappu (43), who was said to be suffering from renal failure, was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Mylapore. One of his kidneys had earlier been removed owing to renal failure. A diagnosis at the hospital established that his other kidney too was affected.
After treatment, Thangappu was discharged on Thursday evening. On Friday morning, some neighbours saw him hanging from a tree near his barracks.
Police sent the body to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital for a postmortem. Police suspected that he took the extreme measure owing to the acute pain he suffered.
