BHUBANESWAR: Maoist leader Dunna Keshava Rao alias Azad was remanded in judicial custody for 14 days by a Nayagarh court on Sunday. After the Crime Branch of Orissa Police produced the rebel in the court after the  three-day remand ended, the SDJM, Nayagarh, sent him to jail. The guerilla leader was arrested on Thursday and being questioned by the Crime Branch. On Sunday, the investigating agency, however, did not pray for extension of his custody nor did it ask for his remand in the Swami Lakshmanananda Saraswati murder case.“We have not yet decided on extension of his remand. We will look at the outcome of the questioning and then take a call,” an officer said.Meanwhile, security has been beefed up at the Nayagarh sub-jail where the Red rebel is lodged. Given his stature in the Maoist organisation, the district police and jail authorities are apprehensive about his safety after he gave himself up and shared information with the police about the banned outfit.Sources said a formal request for moving Azad to a bigger prison may soon be made before the court.Interestingly, things seem to have come a full circle for the Red rebel. In 2008, the chilling attack on the district headquarters town of Nayagarh, its police stations, armoury and other police establishments were planned and executed by Azad himself. He is a prime accused in the case which had left 14 cops and a civilian dead. Now he is back in a prison in the same district.
