CHENNAI: The Corporation of Chennai on Wednesday made progress on proposals on a number of fronts, as councillors voted to approve a myriad of projects. Prime areas of focus at the meeting were roads and education. Councillors approved infrastructure development works to the tune of `182 cr-ore, aimed at areas recently brought under the Corporation’s purview.The plans aimed at consolidated building of roads, storm water drains, streetlights, pavements and other basic amenities were approved by the Council. The projects were part of the `500 crore fund, alloted by the State for improvement of infrastructure in the city.Of the alloted funds, `333.27 crore was for the improvement of basic infrastructure in the newly expanded areas. The `182 cro-re-worth proposals approved by the Council were only the first phase of the works, Ma-yor Saidai S Duraisamy said. The remaining projects would be brought before the Council for approval during their next meeting in the first week of May.“These works will be completed within the next six months. The idea is to complete the projects before the rains,” said Duraisamy. “Ro-ad works in other parts of the city are on in full swing and will be completed in the next two months,” he added.The Council also okayed a proposal to convert 30 primary and middle schools run by the civic body to English-medium, for Classes I to V. Apart from this, the Council approved a proposal to instruct teachers to hold parent-teacher meetings after every terminal examination. The meeting saw voting on a total of 64 items and the tabling of 14 questions.
