They are perhaps looking for a more permanent solution to Chennai’s stinking problem, but the Chennai Corporation has decided to fill up the posts of missing sanitation workers in the city as soon as possible.
Tenders for more than 1000 workers who do the jobs of sweeping and emptying the garbage bins have been called recently.
This decision was made after an extensive re-assessment on the part of the Corporation by a team of two joint commissioners and two additional commissioners.
About 3,000 odd workers are currently needed in the Corporation’s sanitary department, of which an estimated 1,400 workers in the newly-added areas have already been hired on a contract basis, according to Corporation Commissioner D Karthikeyan.
“Barring three zones where we have a private company clearing garbage, we are in a dire need for more sanitation workers across the rest of the city, in order to carry out the work,” he said.
