Looms of Bengal have been much acclaimed the world over, since ancient times.They come in exquisite designs and boast of fabulous weaving techniques.Handloom products of Bengal have a rich tradition.The heritage of their master weavers and artisans are now blended with new technological designs and threads to produce wide variety of products.The style of weaving flourished under the benign, rich and enlightened patronage of kings and emperors and the textiles may be considered of excellence for its super fine qualities ever since.As an economic trade and industrial activity, the handlooms occupy a place second only to agriculture in providing livelihood to the people.Bringing these rich looms and traditions together with chic yet ethnic styles is Collage, the multi-designer store located at Ashok Nagar.The store has launched their new and exclusive autumn collection of tunics and kurtas called the Bengal Taant (Bengal weaves).The handloom tunics are woven in regions around West Bengal and have stories associated with it, the primary one being Phulia that bears witness to a time.Each stitch narrates the saga of the people behind these hand woven pieces of art.Each piece stands alone not only in its design but also in its story.The thread ranges from a mix of cotton to silk, tassar, kota and matka.The collection includes silk tunics with circle dyes in stark contrasts that were a part of the Lakme Fashion Week collection this year.The embroidery collection too was showcased and is set with placement embroidery in a mix of leaf foliage and leaf motifs from a herbarium.Fashion Designer Paromita Banerjee states, “The Bengal Taant collection fuses ethnic-contemporary influences.The collection is famous for its stylish elegance and is inspired from the feel of handloom fabrics and emphasise the feel of the ‘hand-made’.”
