CHENNAI: Considering the fact that a large quantum of rain water goes to sea during the monsoon seasons due to the insufficient storage capacity of the resources that provide drinking water to Chennai city, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Tuesday allocated Rs 130 crore for deepening the lakes around Chennai. Through this measure, 568 mcft of water can be stored in addition to the existing capacity. The population of the Chennai metropolitan city and their drinking water requirements have been increasing day by day. The rain water and the water received from the Krishna river and Veeranam lake are being stored in these water resources around the city — Poondi, Red Hills, Chembarambakkam and Sholavaram. However, due to the insufficient capacity of these resources, a large quantum of rain water is drained into the sea. After reviewing the situation, the Chief Minister ordered deepening of the lakes at Porur, Ayanambakkam, Nemam, Sembarambakkam and Sholavaram. As per the directions of the CM, Sholavaram lake will be deepened to increase the storage level to 1,080 mcft at an expenditure of Rs 50 lakh while the Porur lake will be deepened by one to two feet at a cost of Rs 20 crore. This will result in the storage level going up by 70 mcft.Similarly, the banks of Ayanambakkam lake will be strengthened at a cost of Rs 30 crore to facilitate an increase in storage capacity to 314 mcft. For increasing the storage level of the Nemam lake to 577 mfct, a sum of Rs 79.50 crore will be spent.Due to these steps, rain water flowing into the sea will be prevented and the drinking water needs of the people will be met.
