CHENNAI: Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Saturday announced that the Clean Village Movement, an initiative launched in 2003, during her earlier tenure as chief minister, would be revived to ensure hygiene in rural areas of the State.The initiative was aimed at achieving a sanitary revolution in the State by prevention of defecating in open places, solid waste management, setting up of night soil based bio-gas plants, recycling of drainage water, setting up of toilet facilities in houses and schools, and recognising villages which effectively implement the these schemes. The Chief Minister has announced a Rs 5 lakh cash prize to village panchayats which achieve 100 per cent sanitation through this scheme. As many as 31 villages panchayats will be chosen (one from each of the 31 rural districts) to receive the prize. For this, the CM has allocated Rs 1.55 crore.E-GOV AWARDSMeanwhile, the CM instituted three e-governance awards for college students who excel in computer applications. The award carries a cash prize of Rs 2 lakh and cup worth Rs 15,000.Awards will be given in the following categories: development of application using mobile technology, innovative application for differently-abled persons, and Development of application using neural network.Students above 18 years studying in government, government-aided and private colleges can participate in the contest for these awards. A group of eight students from each college will be allowed to take part in the contest.
