The debacle at the World Cup in the West Indies has demoralised the nation.
We have to change the system. We have to restore to Indians the faith that India can win. It is important to our mental health and our confidence.
In our quest to find ways to improve cricket we need new approaches and new ways of thinking. Let’s focus on the BCCI. They run cricket in this country.
We are saddled with their politics and corruption. If there was no corruption why would politicians (Sharad Pawar and Lalu Prasad) be interested in running the BCCI? It is time for a change.
There is no law that says the BCCI has to run Indian cricket. Look at soccer internationally. Private clubs are the ones who discover hidden talent. The owners of these clubs have to find the best talent. They have to scour the hinterland and villages and discover new talent. Or they will lose to another club.
If they lose to another club, they get hit where it hurts: their pockets. We need that system in India. We need private cricket clubs.
We need talent scouts who will not sit in their offices and play politics. We need people who will not take money to promote cricketers. We need cricket selectors who will travel the country to see an 'up and coming' bowler or batsman in action.
Private cricket clubs will nurture and encourage talent or they will go out of business. Talent will be king. India will produce the best cricketers in the world, not Australia.
Non-performers will be ruthlessly rooted out. No matter who they are. The private cricket clubs cannot afford to have them around. Since their price will drop if they don't perform, no other cricket club will want them.
Cricketers everywhere will benefit. They will know that if they show talent, they will be in demand. They won’t need to worry about bribing BCCI officials.
They won’t need to worry about having enough money to play cricket. The private cricket clubs will take care of them if they are truly talented. Only talent will be important, not their lineage. The application forms won’t even have a column for 'father’s name'.
Politicians will have no place in cricket. Lalu Prasad, Sharad Pawar will all have to compete with the private cricket clubs . The Government cannot match private initiative. But they certainly know how to destroy initiative and reward only their cronies.
Let us rid cricket of the babu culture. Let us take our due place in the world of International cricket. As the richest cricketing nation we have to be Number 1 and private cricket clubs is the only way forward.
