PUDUCHERRY: A three-year-old girl, who was referred to Government Hospital, died mysteriously on Monday afternoon. Close relatives charged that negligence of the hospital authorities resulted in her death, However, the hospital authorities refuted the charges.Selvakumar said that on Monday morning he admitted his daughter Deepika to the ESI hospital in Gorimedu as she had been ill for the last two days. The doctor prescribed and gave her tablets and syrup after which she was put under observation.Deepika, however, collapsed and the relatives rushed her to the doctor who told them that she had died.She was the only child of Selvakumar, an employee of Swadeshi textile mill and Rajalakshmi, residents of Pudunagar in Thengathittu. Rajalakshmi died six months ago due to a heart problem.A few members of public joined the relatives and squatted on the road in front of the hospital demanding action against the hospital staff for negligence.Police from Grand Bazaar station, led by sub-inspector Kannan, rushed to the spot and held talks with them.Welfare minister P Rajavelu also reached hospital and spoke to Selvakumar and others who wanted to know the reason for the child’s death. Meanwhile, Resident Medical Officer Dr A Selvaraj told the minister that there was no negligence on the part of the hospital staff. He cited the prescriptions to support his argument.Rajavelu asked the father to file a complaint with the police if they had any further suspicions and sent the body for postmortem.All this while, Deepika was resting on her father’s lap for the last time.
