CHENNAI: Around 2,000 students from various city schools, in association with the Police Makkal Nalluravu Sangam, took out a rally from Mint Street to NSC Bose Road to highlight the need for pollution-free celebrations during Pongal. Students from Manilal N Mithra Girls Higher Secondary School, Moongidai Goenka Girls Higher Secondary School, Ganesh Galada Jain Girls Higher Secondary School, Shri Jawanthrae Tejraj Surana Jain Vidyalaya, Sugundha Suasans Higher Secondary School and Kanyaka Parameshwari Arts and Science College participated in the rally.
The students, who walked through the by-lanes of Mint Street, carried placards that urged people to ensure a smoke-free Bhogi. They also urged people to celebrate Pongal keeping in mind the environment around them and the general health of the people. The event was flagged off by Assistant Commissioner of Police Radhakrishnan.
K Fakir Moideen of the Police Makkal Nalluravu Sangam said, “We took out a similar rally last year and the response was good. This year too, the schools obliged to be a part of the rally. It is good to see children making a difference.”
Others present at the rally included founder of Police Makkal Nalluravu Sangam MSMD Anwar, secretary R Ravanan, coordinator A Sheik Ibrahim, North Chennai secretary A Ravichandran and Womens’ Wing coordinator Gandhimathi.
