Chennai: A Nepali duo was arrested here on Thursday for stealing valuables last month from a money lender’s house in Purasawalkam. They were remanded to custody for 15 days on Friday. Police identified them as Mani Bahadur (46) and Mohan Bahadur (39), hailing from Kerala. They stole 25 sovereigns of gold and 10 kg of silver from the house of Surendar Singhvi on July 19 when he was away with his family.
Looking for a lead, Inspector T Jayakumar traced a mobile number, which was in use in Andhra Pradesh, to a woman who told the police that the duo visited her every month. She reportedly said that they spent lavishly every time they visited a brothel. Police, with the woman’s help, laid a trap to nab the duo. The accused were asked to come to the Chennai Central Railway Station on Thursday where they were arrested. Based on their confessions, police recovered Rs 1.5 lakh, 25 sovereigns of gold and 10 kg of silver.
Sources said there were several theft cases pending against the duo in Bangalore as well. Jayakumar said, “It is too early to comment on their role in the thefts reported in the city and only investigations will reveal whether they were involved in any other offences.”
