The BJP had earlier opposed Lt Suhag's appointment saying only the new government should choose the next Army chief.
New Delhi: The Defence Ministry on Monday recommended the name of Lieutenant General Dalbir Singh Suhag for the post of the next Army Chief. The recommendation was sent to the Appointments Committee of Cabinet after the Election Commission gave the go-ahead to the government on the deliberations.
"If the EC has conceded the proposal of the appointment of new Army chief, we welcome the decision," Congress leader Shakeel Ahmed said.
The UPA had earlier proposed the name of Lt General Suhag for the top post. But the BJP had opposed Suhag's appointment saying only the new government should choose the next chief, following which that matter had been put on the backburner.
