CHENNAI: The Centre is well aware of the need for increased cancer care, announced Union Minister for Shipping G K Vasan, “The UPA has examined the need for cancer care and identified that there is a public health emergency,” he said.Speaking at a launch programme organised by the city-based V S Hospitals and Madras Cancer Institute, Vasan explained how the Centre had allocated Rs 731.52 crore for a National Cancer Control Programme that will be implemented in 100 districts by 2011-2012. “Representatives will be stationed at hospitals in districts and community health centres to train doctors and paramedics,” he added.Vasan mentioned that the Union Health budget for 2011-12 has seen an increase of nearly 20 per cent, from `22,300 crore to `26,760 crore. “Early referrals will be the key in this national control programme,” he said.He inaugurated the RapidArc radiotherapy unit that has been brought to the hospital. V-C of the Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University Dr Mayilvahanan Natarajan inaugurated the DNB Medical Oncology course, which has been introduced at the institute for the first time in the State.
