RAMANATHAPURAM: Pattinamkathan is a village on the outskirts of Ramanathapuram town, where no flags of political parties or caste outfits fly. This is a village, which had not seen any caste conflicts, in this caste ridden district.The village is located on the National Highway to Rameswaram with a population of about 10,000 people belonging to all communities. All of them are living peacefully as brothers and sisters and there is no discrimination against any community.Though, some political leaders, including former AIADMK minister Anwar Raja, Ravichandra Ramavanni, president of district Congress, Kuppuram, national leader of Ramsethu Protection Movement, Adalarasu, RSS functionary, and others are residents of Pattinamkathan panchayat, no flag of their parties flutter in the village.Peace and harmony reign in the village and the residents say that if a flag pole of a party is erected, it would destroy the atmosphere of tranquility. The people also eschew caste considerations and therefore, no flag of any caste outfit is seen here.Their unity is demonstrated when all communities join in celebrating the annual festival of Goddess Raja Kanthariamman temple. Over 500 women from all castes, take out ‘mulaipari’ procession as one group.When the district witnessed a series of communal clashes, Pattinamkathan stood aloft without letting the problem enter its territory thus maintaining harmony.Pattinamkathan panchayat chief Kavitha Kathiresan said brotherhood prevailed in the panchayat without any discrimination. People treated everyone as a relative and there was no communal clash in the village.
