BANGALORE: The Department of PreUniversity Education has decided to make career counselling compulsory for second year preuniversity students from this academic year.
The department, following a direction from Minister for Primary and Secondary Education Vishveshwar Hegde Kageri, is gearing up to conduct career counselling in all PUC colleges across the state. The minister, earlier, had said that there is a need for career counselling at PU level. Most of the students are confused at this level and a majority of them will not have information about career alternatives to engineering and medicine, the minister had felt.

Speaking to Express, Director to Department of Pre University Education Rashmi V Mahesh confirmed that they are working on the draft of the plan. "Career counselling classes will be conducted once in a week. However, the complete detailed plan will be finalised by this weekend at the government level," she stated.

Dr M S Thimmappa, former vicechancellor of Bangalore University, who is also a senior professor in Psychology said that career counselling should not be restricted to providing various options available for students. "It may lead to further confusions," he felt.
