Bollywood actor Ajay Devgan is in Cannes promoting his latest flick, Omkaara, which is based on Shakespeare’s Othello. CNN-IBN talks to him about the film.
Rajeev Masand: You are a man of few words. We know it takes a lot to get you to promote your pictures. You are here in Cannes. What's the mood?
Ajay Devgan: I think Omkaara is a fantastic film. It deserves to be promoted here. Got in front of the international market. There are very few films which are commercial and sensible and this is one of them.
Rajeev Masand: Now the thing about Omkaara is that it's Shakespeare again. Othello's a play that's been done several times over. It's a play that's been done on screen, done on stage. How did you guys do it differently? Was that exciting for you? Because you have not done Shakespeare before.
Ajay Devgan: Don't get offended when I say this but this is what I really believe and that's why I say it. There's no comparison between Shakespeare and anybody because Shakespeare was a play, a book and you need to adapt it right for films. And lots of times things go wrong also. Not that films made earlier on Othello went wrong, but according to me I think the way Vishal has adapted it, he's done a great job. And when you compare a film to a book, it's always the book but here I think the adaptation is so well that it should come as much as the book.
Rajeev Masand: So what's the mood like? Your wife has a movie coming out shortly. She's back on screen after a long time. There's a lot of excitement among the audience. Are you sort of excited for her?
Ajay Devgan: I want to see the film. I am sure she must have done a great job and I'm sure the film will be good. So, let's see.
Rajeev Masand: So finally, when do we expect to see the two of you together?
Ajay Devgan: No clue. I mean it's very difficult to convince both of us to like the same script so, you never know.
Rajeev Masand: Have a great time at Cannes. Looking forward to see Omkaara.
Ajay Devgan: Thank you so much.
