BANGALORE:  With hardly any proper toilet facility for the entire market and clogged storm water drains which is yet to be de-silted before the monsoon sets in, the Malleshwaram 8th cross market is still the most visited and preferred destination for shoppers in the city.Even though the authority has not provided any dust bins, the shopkeepers have taken the initiative to provide the same on their own. However, a major grievance faced by the people, comes from the hawkers themselves who are demanding some kind of shelter considering the scorching heat, to carry on their daily business.Although the roads remain dirty and polluted, the municipal corporation has been doing its job to collect the waste every morning.City Express spoke to a few hawkers in the market. “We wish the authorities would give us a proper facility to sell these articles so that we don’t have to be chased by the police every hour. We risk our business by leaving our goods uncovered in the open when it rains, as we have to look for shelter.” said Chetan, a hawker. As darkness sets in, the list of problems seems to become longer, not only the hawkers but also the pedestrians face trouble during the evening times, as the street lights are not in working condition.Nagaraj, a shopkeeper said, “Since the last ten days, the trash has not been cleared by the corporation due to some transportation problems. However, when I called and complained, within 10 minutes, there was a truck sent in to clear the waste.” He continued, “I am personally very happy with the people managing this area and have no complaints. There is parking facility also that has been provided for two wheelers by the authorities. People might think that the parking space blocks their shops but actually it prevents dust from entering the shops.” The authorities have not learnt any lesson from the recent fire mishap at the Russel Market. The market was devoid of any fire safety equipment. To add to the miseries of the people, are the narrow lanes and the continuous vehicular movement that creates  total chaos in a conjested area. The less said the better about the condition of the footpaths in this bustling market of the city.
