BJP's promotion of personality cult not good for country: Congress

New Delhi: Hitting out at BJP chief Rajnath Singh over changing party slogans and centring poll campaign on its prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, senior Congress leader Anand Sharma on Tuesday said "personality cult and authoritarianism" is not good for the country.

The comment came a day after Singh tweeted a poster featuring himself along with the slogan "Ab Ki Baar, Bhajapa Sarkar (Time for a BJP government)", followed by another tweet within minutes with a poster of Modi with the slogan "Ab Ki Baar, Modi Sarkar (Time for a Modi government)."

"This is as per plan. One person projected above the party. The government of one person, they are not talking of BJP government. Yesterday, Rajnath tweeted and immediately made 360 degree U-turn by saying that it has to be Modi sarkar not a BJP government," Sharma told a TV news channel.

The Union minister said, "Orderly change is always welcome but a change which is born with intent to promote personality cult and authoritarianism is not welcome change for any party or for the country."

Kapil Sibal, Union minister and Congress candidate for Chandini Chowk constituency, said that it seemed BJP did not exist and that Modi was larger than the nation.

"Whether it was done with his permission or not that is not the issue.... (It seems) as if there is nothing else in India other than Narendra Modi, as if BJP does not exist, Constitution does not exist, as if Modi is a cult figure. It is time to reject an individual who thinks (he is) larger than nation," Sibal said.
