New Delhi: A BJP leader was among three people arrested on Saturday in connection with the lynching of a man in Jharkhand’s Ramgarh district by a mob which accused him of carrying beef in his car. Nityanand Mahto, the media in-charge of the BJP's Ramgarh unit, was arrested along with two others from the house of local party unit chief Pappu Banerjee.
Mohammad Allimuddin, a meat trader and resident of neighbouring Hazaribagh district, was beaten to death by a mob on suspicion that he was carrying beef in his vehicle on June 29, hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi had condemned killing in the name of cow protection.
The mob had surrounded his van bearing a West Bengal number plate in the Bazaar Tand area of Ramgarh. They dragged Allimuddin, 40, out and thrashed him, injuring him seriously. The police on getting the information rushed to the spot and took Allimuddin to a hospital, where he was declared brought dead. The mob had also set the vehicle on fire.
The BJP government in the state had announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh for dependents of the victim’s family.
