In a case that shows the ruling Nitish Kumar government in bad light, a 50-year-old Mahadalit belonging to Bihar's Nalanda district died of hunger on Friday.
Manjhi is reported to have gone without food for around 10-20 days.
Speaking on the matter, the District Magistrate of Nalanda, Tyagrajan SM, said that the deceased had not eaten food since 10 days while Manjhi's son has claimed that he was without food for around 20 days.
The DM has denied starvation as the reason for Manjhi's death citing a medical report which he said doesn't mention anything in this regard.
Nalanda is the home district of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar who came back for a second term as CM in November 2015.
Manjhi is survived by his 8-year-old son.
Meanwhile, the opposition attacked the Nitish Kumar government and said it shows the deteriorating condition of the state.
JD(U) leader Ajay Alok however has defended the government and claimed that the man died due to a terminal illness.
Several cases of starvation were reported from many districts of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh in the past two months.
