BANGALORE: Namma Bengaluru has many coveted tittles. While some of them bring pride to the citizens, other tittles are just worrisome. However, in the latest of such ‘tittle conferring’, Bangalore has beaten other Indian cities for both quality of living as well as personal safety record, even though they fare very low in the global ratings. This title coming shortly after the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) conferred the title of ‘suicide capital’ of the nation. Consultant firm Mercer has released the list of cities worldwide for best quality of living as well as safety record.Bangalore has been placed at 141st position for quality of living and it stood 117th in personal safety survey. Other Indian cities such as New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkatta have also featured on the list. Dhaka in Bangladesh (204), ranks lowest in the Asia-Pacific region for personal security. The survey was conducted in over 220 cities across the world. Vienna has the best living standards in the world, according to the Mercer 2011 Quality of Living Survey followed by Zurich and Auckland. The personal safety record, based on internal stability, crime levels, law enforcement effectiveness and the host country’s international relations, saw Luxembourg top the list followed by Bern, Helsinki and Zurich.“The top-ranking cities for personal safety and security are in politically stable countries with good international relations and relatively sustainable economic growth. Most of the low-scoring cities are in countries with civil unrest, high crime levels and little law enforcement,” Slagin Parakatil, Senior Researcher at Mercer, said.
