Aussies, Dutch off to a winning start
Defending champion Australia beat Pakistan in the men's Champions Trophy while the Dutch defeated Argentina.

Terrassa (Spain): Troy Elder twice converted penalty corners as defending champion Australia beat Pakistan 3-2 in the opening game of the men's Champions Trophy on Saturday while the Netherlands defeated Argentina 4-2.

With captain Muhammad Saqlain suspended, Sohail Abbas twice equalised for Pakistan before Elder scored the winner in the 57th minute.

Michael McCann gave the Kookaburras the lead with a deflected shot past goalkeeper Salman Akbar in the second minute, but Abbas evened the match four minutes before half time with a penalty stroke.

Elder restored Australia's lead in the 40th minute before Abbas responded with a penalty corner of his own in the 54th.

Elder's finale was one of nine goals scored from penalty corners on the day.

Taeke Taekema scored three times, twice from penalty corners, to lead the Dutch over Argentina.

World player of the year Teun de Nooijer scored in the 55th minute to give the Netherlands a 3-1 lead and break open the match.

In the only other game, Tibor Weissenborn put Germany ahead in the fourth minute before Santi Freixa equalised for Spain from a penalty corner with five minutes remaining for a 1-1 draw.
