Assessment of bone health should be a part of the regular medical check-up, just like blood pressure or sugar levels especially after 50 years of age, said Dr T S Ravi Kumar, director of JIPMER, here on Sunday.

Inaugurating the Continuing Medical Education  on ‘Metabolic Bone Diseases’ conducted by the Departments of Endocrinology, Orthopedics and Medicine, Kumar stressed on the need for good nutrition and regular exercise for better bone health.

Experts at the programme felt that the main drawback of our system is the failure to recognise the importance of bone health as these disorders are not actively diagnosed.

Detection of these disorders requires blood tests for levels of various minerals and estimation of bone strength by the bone densitometer, said Ravi Kumar.

Metabolic bone diseases include osteoporosis, osteomalacia and rickets which lead to fragility fractures, bone pain, muscle ache, bowing of legs in children and difficulty in walking. These diseases are caused by the lack of calcium or vitamin D.

According to experts at the CME, adequate intake of foods rich in calcium (milk and other dairy products) and vitamin D (fish, egg and cereals) may help prevent bone disorders.

Sun exposure also adds to the balance of vitamin D in the body, experts added.

JIPMER Dean Dr K S Reddy made a felicitation speech. Head of Endocrinology Department Dr Abdoul Hamide welcomed the delegates while Assistant Professor of Endocrinology Department Dr C Sadishkumar Kamalanathan proposed a vote of thanks.
