Security was stepped up as 8,995 polling stations opened for voters. But, heavy rains and reports of violence kept voters indoors.

Guwahati: Sporadic violence marred the polling in the tribal areas even as more than 65 per cent of 82.5 lakh electorate exercised their rights to franchise in the second and final phase of the Assam Assembly elections to 61 seats on Monday.

However, the Election Commission officials said that figure could go up as the final figure was yet to pour in from the remote reas.

Sources also informed that there were some militancy-related incidents in Karbi Anglong, while in Bodoland, there were some reports of intimidation.

An estimated 40 per cent people had turned out till noon to vote.

The weather continued to play spoilsport even as incidents of violence were reported from across the state.

However, people were seen queuing up in large numbers at polling booths to decide the fate of 482 candidates of the 126-strong Assembly.

There have also been reports of violence from across the state.

Two Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawans were feared killed in a blast in the Diphu area of Karbi Anglong district.

Earlier in the day, one person was killed and a CRPF jawan kidnapped by Karbi Longri Northcachar Liberation Front (KLNLF) insurgents today in Kokrajhar and Karbi Anglong districts.

The head teacher of Jainar High School in Singbargaon in Kokrajhar district was killed by unidentified persons early this morning, reports reaching here said.

In another incident, CRPF head constable Muskanda was abducted by KLNLF from the house of a villager early this morning in Kabri Anglong, officials said.

Muskanda had gone to the house along with a polling personnel from nearby Langparpang polling station to take bath.

Stating the situation there was under control, officials said, voting was on in the district despite the KLNLF poll boycott call.

The first phase of Asembly elections in the state on April three had passed off peacefully without any incident.

The second phase of polls will decide the political careers of the AGP president and chief ministerial candidate Brindabon Goswami, two-time chief minister and President of newly formed Asom Gana Parishad (P) Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, Health Minister Bhumidhar Barman and Minister of State for Home Rockybul Hussain.
