Assam: 5 arrested for assaulting Cong MLA Rumi
The Congress MLA from Borkhola, Assam, is at the centre of an alleged bigamy row.

New Delhi: The Assam Police on Sunday arrested five men in connection with the assault on 33-year-old Congress MLA from Borkhola, Rumi Nath. Rumi and her second husband Zakir Hussain were beaten up by a hundred-strong mob outside a Karimganj hotel, where the MLA had gone to meet her father, on Friday night.

Rumi is at the centre of a bigamy row after she left her first husband Rakesh Singh and their two-year-old daughter in May this year and eloped with Hussain, a Facebook friend, converted to Islam and married him.

Her act has earned her the wrath of various groups that say she betrayed her electorates. Rumi was earlier with the BJP, but defected to the Congress later on.

Meanwhile, prohibitory orders under Section 144 have been clamped on Karimganj that remains tense after the incident.
