Former Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot on Wednesday demanded from the state government to clarify the facts on the alleged use of animals' antibiotic-injections administered on human being at a Jodhpur government hospital.

"The Medical and Health Minister should come forward clarifying the facts and figures on the alleged use of animals' antibiotic-injections on human being at the Mathura Das Mathur Hospital there," Gehlot said. There should be a fair probe into the case of medical negligence so that the fear and confusion in minds of people be removed, he said.

As many as 300 patients in the hospital have been administered antibiotic injections with vials carrying "For Animal Treatment Only" label, prompting authorities to order a probe into the matter. Soon after the matter came to light on June 23, the hospital authorities constituted a four-member panel to probe the matter.

Deepak Verma, the administrative head of the Mathura Das Mathur Hospital, where the patients were administered Meropenem antibiotic, had said this could be a case of wrong labelling.

"We have procured 1,000 vials from the market by the name of Pepenum containing drug Meropenum. Out of this, about 300 vials have been administered and the rest seized by the drug control department," Verma said. "No reaction or mishap has been reported even after about 300 vials having been administered," he said.
