THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala Swathanthra Matsya Thozhilali Federation state president T Peter and secretary Anto Elias alleged anomalies in the construction of an artificial reef in the coastal area of Kovalam spending Rs 8 crore meant for tsunami rehabilitation. In a statement issued here the other day, they said the geotextile bags used for constructing the artificial reef were washed ashore the other day exposing the faulty construction. The artificial reef was constructed jointly by the Harbour Engineering Department and the ASR company from New Zealand. They said the ASR company had claimed the project a success in their website. However, the fishermen had objected to the project from the very beginning. The federation leaders urged the government to conduct a comprehensive probe into allegations of corruption in the construction of the artificial reef.
