Guwahati: Two army vehicles were blown up in a powerful landmine explosion in Assam on Wednesday, killing one solider and critically wounding three.
A defence spokesman said suspected militants of the outlawed United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) triggered the explosion near village Jeypore in Dibrugarh district, about 590 km east of Guwahati.
"Two vehicles of the 42 Field Regiment hit the landmine and were ripped apart in which one soldier was killed and three, including a captain, were seriously injured," army spokesman Col. Narender Singh told IANS.
The soldiers were on a routine patrol when the explosion took place.
No rebel group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
"There is no doubt it was the handiwork of the ULFA," the official said.
The ULFA, a militant group fighting for an independent homeland in Assam since 1979, on Tuesday threatened to intensify its armed struggle and accused the army of carrying out genocide in the name of anti-insurgency operations.
The ULFA is blamed by authorities for a wave of bombings in Assam during the past two months in which 24 people were killed and 128 wounded.
