CHENNAI: Dr Vijay Kumar Saraswat, Scientific Advisor to Rakshi Mantri, Director General, Defence Research and Development Organization and Secretary, Department of Defence Research and Development, presided over the first convocation of Vel Tech Dr RR and Dr SR Technical University on Monday. He distributed gold medals to university rank holders and degrees to the 147 MBA and M Tech pass outs. Chancellor of the varsity, Dr Vel R Rangarajan, presided over the function.Dr Vijay Kumar Saraswat inaugurated the Vel Tech Research Park - 1 and released the International Journal of Mathematics and Scientific Computing. In his Convocation address, he stressed upon faculty freedom, encouragement of research and also urged the students to apply for more Intellectual Property Rights to ensure they get the credit for their research. He also advised the faculty to guide the students ably and nurture the need for research.Vel Tech University has established an exclusive Research Park for an in-house partnership in industrial research with leading industries, Research and Development Institutes and government agencies, on its campus. The Research Park also has a Technology Incubator to encourage entrepreneurs to set up production and service units. The varsity has created a reservoir of expertise in applied mathematics with a close network of its professors and renowned mathematicians.The university was established in 2009 by elevating the status of erstwhile Vel Tech (Engineering College) of 12 years standing. Almost 150 students were admitted to the PG programme in its first batch in MBA, MTech(IT), MTech( CSE), MTech (Networking), MTech(Embedded Systems), MTech(Power Electronics) and MTech (CAD/CAM).Vijay Kumar Saraswat Inaugurated the Vel Tech Research Park - 1 and released the International Journal of Mathematics and Scientific Computing. In his convocation address, he stressed the need for research at an interdisciplinary level among students in Indian Universities. He also spoke about faculty freedom, encourage of inter-disciplinary research and applying for more Intellectual Property Rights on research work carried out by faculty.
