HYDERABAD: Five SSC toppers of government schools from each district of the state have been selected for the Andhra Pradesh Physicians of North America (APNA) foundation scholarships this year.A total of 121 scholarships will be awarded and each student will be given a cheque of $225 (`10,000 approximately).An amount of Rs 12 lakh will be given as awards, said foundation president Balakrishna Reddy Indurti. “We have selected the students on the basis of the list provided by the Board of Secondary Education. It is a merit-based scholarship and the only criteria is that the student should be from a government school,” Reddy said at a press conference on Thursday.Of the awardees, 115 are district toppers and five students from Nellore district have been given special scholarships. When more than one candidate is eligible for the award, date-of-birth of the student is taken into account, with the older student receiving the award.The scholarships will be presented on June 19 at 10 a.m. at NTR Kala Mandiram, Potti Sriramulu Telugu University, Nampally. Students selected for the scholarship have been sent invitation letters.Those who have not received any intimation and are eligible for the award, can check the APNA website www.apnafoundation.org for the list. Reddy said. Such students may attend the function directly by producing hall-ticket, marks list and a photo-identity proof.APNA foundation is run by physicians and professionals living in the US and carries its operations in AP through its volunteer base.
