BANGALORE: Following the approval from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Saturday announced the appointment of V S Hegde as the Chairman and Managing Director of Antrix Corporation Limited. Hedge, a veteran remote sensing applications scientist, was the Scientific Secretary of ISRO Bangalore.
Antrix, which is the commercial arm of ISRO, for the first time, will have a fulltime chairman and managing director. ISRO Chairman K Radhakrishnan while announcing the appointment said, "These changes are part of our plan to restructure Antrix according to the changing times so that we can exploit all possible commercial opportunities in space programmes."

Radhakrishnan also informed that the coordination between ISRO and Antrix would be further strengthened with the constitution of a coordination management committee comprising senior directors of ISRO and CMD of Antrix.

Speaking later, Hegde said that though the share of Antrix in the global space was only at around `1,000 crore, tremendous opportunities exist for Antrix to leverage ISRO's capabilities and make a mark globally.
