New Delhi: Former Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh on Monday accused the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal of indulging in politics of 'witch-hunt' and rebutted allegations of any liaison with a Pakistani woman.
Returning from his sojourn in London, Amarinder Singh said the Congress leader and All-India Anti-Terrorist Front Chairman MS Bitta was "colluding" with Akali Dal leader Sukhbir Singh Badal and was trying to tarnish his image by levelling baseless charges.
Last week, Bitta had alleged that Amarinder has a close relation with an ISI agent. Addressing a press conference in New Delhi, Bitta even went on to claim that he suspects some sensitive security-related documents of the country were leaked to Pakistan through Amarinder's close association with Pakistan journalist Arrosa Alaam, whom he labeled as an ISI agent.
"Aroosa had undergone special training with ISI and has been reporting on defence in Pakistan," Bitta claimed. He also demanded a high-level enquiry to probe into Amarinder's relations with Arrosa Alaam.
Reacting to the allegations, Amarinder Singh admitted that he knew her.
"I heard my name being linked with a Pakistani journalist and in fact, I have been accused of having gone to the extent of marrying her. I admit that I do know her, but like her, I know several journalists both from India and Pakistani media. Does that give anybody the license to associate my name with anyone they feel like" he said.
He said, "I have also been accused of being an ISI agent. Do I look like one?"
Amarinder Singh said Bitta had at one time even levelled some allegations against Congress President Sonia Gandhi and was in the old habit of singing the tune of the present day government just to "protect his security cover and the government houses alloted to him."
