Manoj Sinha, the junior telecom minister, has said that every gram panchayat in India will be connected by high-speed optic fibre by end 2018.

New Delhi: Manoj Sinha, the junior telecom minister, has said that every gram panchayat in India will be connected by high-speed optic fibre by the end of 2018.

"At present, we have laid 90,000 km of optic fibre and by December 2018, every gram panchayat will be wired and get upto 100 Mbps of internet speed," Sinha said at the India Business Leader Awards organised by CNBC TV18 in New Delhi on Thursday.

This is part of the Government's promise to bridge the digital divide and take high-speed data services to all areas of the country. It also ties in with start up India programme.

At the same event, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu said that his government is also working towards providing an internet backbone in the state that will ensure that each household gets access to the internet. "We will ensure that each household gets 15 Mbps,” Naidu said at the awards function.

Last year, India became the country with the most Facebook users in the world, overtaking the United States. Many of the world's biggest tech companies are eyeing the potential of connecting India's one billion plus population to internet services. Google has been installing free Wi-Fi at railway stations and Facebook made a failed pitch for its free basics service, which was rejected by the government.
