Ahead Of Onam, Kerala Locals Decide To Harvest Flowers Instead Of Buying Them
Students of Kadaikkavur BHSS are gearing up to grow their flowers instead of buying them from the market.

The season of Onam is just around the corner, which marks the end of the rainy season. It is also celebrated for the start of the harvesting season. As per the reports by Local18, the locals have decided to avoid buying flowers for the season from outside.

Earlier, flower arrangements were made by collecting flowers from fields and farmlands but today most people have to buy flowers from shops. The flower market on Onam is so expensive. Students of Kadaikkavur BHSS are gearing up to grow their flowers instead of buying them from the market. Floriculture was started under the guidance of SPC cadets of the school.

In the first phase, about a thousand marigold saplings were planted in the Kavalayur Kulamuttam field. Floriculture started in Kavalayur Kulamuttam Padasekara. The school principal, Sajitha S Nair, inaugurated the garden. Principal Srilekha, Kadaikkavur SI Jayaprasad B and Principal Deepa R Chandran attended the event.

These children will decorate the flower garden with unique flowers for Onam and realise that farming is part of the culture, while they depend on their neighbours to prepare the flower beds for ten days starting from Atham.

This initiative reflects the students’ commitment to preserve cultural traditions by adopting sustainable practices. The project aims to create a vibrant and authentic flower garden that will provide the necessary flowers for the ten-day Onam celebrations.

Local18 reports further that the flower cultivation was commenced at the Madavoor gram panchayat in the past days. The project was inaugurated by B P Murali, the Kilimanoor block panchayat president. M Biju Kumar, the Madavoor grama panchayat president, also graced the occasion with his presence.

The farmers have made sure to start the cultivation during the period, that aligns with the Onam season and can be harvested. As per more information, they have chosen special locations for the harvesting purpose. The initiative is taken by members of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, Kudumbashree activists, Haritha Keralam Mission and representatives of various agricultural groups. Local18 reports further that it is being done in collaboration with several gram panchayats.
