Johannesburg: Ashwell Prince, the first coloured South African to captain a national cricket squad in the tour of Sri Lanka that starts later this week, will be less aggressive than Graeme Smith, who has been left out due to injury.
But whether that will still be the case when South Africa play against India in a triangular series in Sri Lanka is still doubtful.
Selectors will assess the Test series in Sri Lanka and then decide whether he will still captain the side in the triangular series as well.
Prince told the African daily Beeld before the team left for Colombo that his captaincy style differed greatly from that of Smith.
"Don't expect that I will do things like Graeme (Smith) did. He is a very aggressive captain, while I am someone who is much quieter on the field," said Prince.
Acknowledging that it was Smith's injury that catapulted him to captaincy, Prince said that captaining the provincial Western Province squad had been a good learning ground.
"I am someone who works well with the coach and the senior players and I like to work things out tactically. You have to think logically about what you have to achieve as captain."
Conceding that the absence of Smith and Jacques Kallis due to injury; and Shaun Pollock, whose wife is expecting their second baby, could place some pressure on the squad, Prince said: "Each of us realise that we will have to put in that something extra."
Coach Mickey Arthur confirmed that Pollock would play in the second Test.
Arthur also said that the management and selectors would first assess the Test series before taking a call on whether Prince would captain the side in the tri-series with India.
